11/12/2017 Pearson Writing Center - Student Content Author: Craige, Mariah Title: Glories of Guilt Mariah Craige English IV (DE) Mrs. Rotolo/7th 27 October 2017 Glories of Guilt The depth of human emotion is frequently overlooked. People often attempt escaping from their feelings because they view them as frightening, concerning, and at times, unnecessary due to their lack of selfà awareness and personal understanding; however, emotional responses such as guilt are necessary and beneficial if one desires to excel in everyday life. Guilt is believed to be a pesky menace that nags at oneââ¬â¢s selfà conscious until all wrongs are corrected, but with the absence of guilt, humanity would lack all forms of integrity and morality while failing toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦For example, even as a young adult, guilt continues to play a key role in my social interactions. In a study done by C. Smith in 2010, children were analyzed to discover at what age apologies become sincere. Like in the previous study, the results proved that guilt is highly beneficial. It was revealed that children as young as four and five years old were able to understand ââ¬Å"the expression of regretâ⬠and guilt ââ¬Å"of the transgressorâ⬠(Ruckstaetter 391). C. Smith also discovered that from an emotional perspective ââ¬Å"the presence of an apology from a transgressing child to an offended child significantly impacted the emotional response of the offended childâ⬠(Ruckstaetter 391). This means that even at a young age, children begin to understand the feeling of guilt, and this emotion is valuable because it causes an apology from the transgressor, which demonstrates to the victim that a mistake was mad e. Critique of ââ¬ÅWoman as Storyteller in Wide Sargasso Sea Free Essays
Source Roper, Valerie. Woman as Storyteller in Wide Sargasso Sea. Caribbean Quarterly, 34:1/2 (1988:Mar. We will write a custom essay sample on Critique of ââ¬Å"Woman as Storyteller in Wide Sargasso Sea or any similar topic only for you Order Now /June) p. 19 URL: http://pao. chadwyck. com/PDF/1319462795559. pdf Summary In her article, ââ¬Å"Woman as Storyteller in Wide Sargasso Seaâ⬠Valerie Roper asserts that Antoinette is much more than just a narrator. Antoinette tells the story of her life but also illuminates the plight and circumstances of women as increasing self awareness dawns. The duality of Antoinetteââ¬â¢s identity represents the war within women as they struggle to assimilate their own desires, beliefs, and values with those of the paternalistic society in which they live. Roper asserts that Wide Sargasso Sea is an attempt by Antoinette to look back and figure out where things went wrong. When did her downward spiral begin? As Antoinette tells her story, she does so with insight and understanding than can only come from time and reflection. Antoinette does not just recount her life, she also relives it. ââ¬Å"Through her consciousness she retraces with brutal honesty her psychological journey from isolation to disintegration,â⬠(Roper 19). Roper further contends that Antoinette as the storyteller enabled Rhys to use varying degrees of consciousness to illustrate Antoinetteââ¬â¢s journey and revelations. According to Roper, Antoinetteââ¬â¢s relationship with her mother is the crux of her illness both genetically and psychologically. Her withdrawal, like her motherââ¬â¢s was a catalyst for her mental instability, but other factors existed as well. Roper discusses elements and scenes that Antoinette revisits which were important in her development, and ultimately in her unraveling. The road to insanity was much more insidious for Antoinette than it had been for Annette. There were tragic, life-altering events that obviously impacted Annetteââ¬â¢s mental condition; the death of her husband, isolation from Creole society, and ultimately Pierreââ¬â¢s diagnosis. For Antoinette, her mother and childhood, cultural background, psychological invasion, disorientation, and entrapment all played a pivotal role in Antoinetteââ¬â¢s insanity. Response Roper provides an interesting context in which to interpret Rhysââ¬â¢ novel. Perhaps one of the more striking assertions by Roper was regarding point of view. Roper maintains that the parts of the story told from the male point-of-view are a different level of Antoinetteââ¬â¢s consciousness. I had not looked at it that way before and it certainly gives me pause. I had looked at it as a writing technique used by Rhys to deepen meaning and create a more balanced picture. Considering the information provided as revelations made by Antoinette on her search for answers injects a new level of complexity to the story and to Antoinetteââ¬â¢s character. As a reader, I immediately picked up on the connection between Antoinetteââ¬â¢s relationship with her mother and mental state. Roper, however, dove much deeper. She makes a compelling case that ââ¬Å"the society, and her husband, acting on their assumptions, created conditions which aggravated the existing ones and contributed to her disorientation,â⬠(Roper 30). The genetic predisposition for insanity was there, but it was the environment around Antoinette that pushed her over the edge. Antoinette struggled not only for love and acceptance, but also for psychological independence and her own voice. The more she struggles to claim these, the deeper she drifted into abyss. Roperââ¬â¢s most significant argument, for me, is the purpose of Antoinette as storyteller and the role of Rhys. She writes, ââ¬Å"behind Antoinetteââ¬â¢s dramatic re-experiencing is Rhys the producer and director, the puppeteer who manipulates her puppet to tell the tragic story of a woman who was aware of complexity but was unable to realize her real feminine personalityâ⬠(Roper 33). While there were similarities between the lives of Rhys and the character she created, Roperââ¬â¢s argument made me consider the more universal story Rhys was telling. Through Antoinette, Rhys challenges the impact of patriarchy on women. It reveals far more than simply rule by men; it illuminates the internal struggle to find self. Further Research Since a great deal of Antoinetteââ¬â¢s struggleââ¬â¢s deal with her search for identity and acceptance, additional research on Creole society and emancipation add another layer of comprehension to Wide Sargasso Sea. It would further develop the sense of society and the interaction of whites and blacks, but it would also provide context for the journey of discovery and self-awareness that Roper asserts is a vital part of the underlying theme throughout the novel. Historical information would fill in the blanks about the role of England on Jamaican society and the nativesââ¬â¢ reaction to it. Stalwart
Stalwart Stalwart Stalwart By Maeve Maddox A reader asks for clarification regarding the word stalwart: I am confused about the meaning of ââ¬Å"stalwartâ⬠in the following context: ââ¬Å"One of the most influential companies in high technology right now may be a 135-year-old industrial stalwart.â⬠According to OED, as a noun, stalwart means ââ¬Å"loyalist, hard-working supporter.â⬠Nonetheless, I fail to grasp the meaning of stalwart qualified by industrial as adjective. As a noun, stalwart has more than one meaning; ââ¬Å"loyal supporterâ⬠is only one of them. Stalwart began as an adjective. The Old English adjective stalworth was applied to things like ships to mean ââ¬Å"serviceable.â⬠When applied to people and animals, it meant, ââ¬Å"strongly and stoutly built.â⬠The meaning extended to include brave, courageous, and valiant. In Scots dialect, the word became stalwart and was reintroduced into English thanks to the popularity of the novels of Sir Walter Scott. In modern usage, stalwart functions as both adjective and noun. Adjective As an adjective, stalwart means, resolute, unbending, and determined, as well as brave, courageous, and valiant. For example: The epic valor of the Greeks in driving back the Italian invaders together with Britainââ¬â¢s stalwart resistance to Hitlerââ¬â¢s crushing blows, has given new meaning to human courage in war. Her stalwart defense of the environment in Maryland is embodied in her support for building a green jobs workforce, protecting the Chesapeake Bay, and for a clean energy economy. Noun ââ¬Å"A stalwartâ⬠can be a person who has achieved wide recognition in some business or pursuit: Hollywood stalwart Ernest Borgnine dies at age 95 Josh H. Groce, aà noted stalwartà of the Texas trial bar Or it can refer to a company or institution that has been in operation for a long time. This is the sense in which stalwart is used in the sentence submitted by the reader. Here are some more examples of this use of stalwart to refer to a company: Sales for the New York-based pharmaceutical stalwartà were $13.56 billion against last years $13.89 billion. The remaining companies experiencing growth last year [included] electronics retailer HHGregg Inc. and pharmaceutical stalwart Eli Lilly and Co. And while many of its architects are well-known Silicon Valley companies, longtime Milwaukee industrial stalwart Rockwell Automation Inc. has positioned itself at the heart of the phenomenon, which some consider the next industrial revolution. Finally, in the context of politics, the noun stalwart means, ââ¬Å"a sturdy uncompromising partisanâ⬠: AIPAC lauds re-election of pro-Israel stalwarts First deficit panel picks are Democratic stalwarts Utah is overall a conservative state much in line with the public policy principles of Republican stalwarts like Gov. Ancient and Medieval Political Theory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 1
Ancient and Medieval Political Theory - Essay Example i The Greek way of distinguishing what justice and democracy really are, passes through the analyses of various philosophical minds. The definition of the same with regard to the Republic by Plato and the character Thyrasymachus is justice is ââ¬Å"serving the interest of the strongerâ⬠, and secondly, is the obedience to the laws of one stateâ⬠. However, Socrates thinks that the two assertions cannot be real explanations since the predicates they carry do conflict in one way or another. Plato rounds up by defining justice as ââ¬Å"the greatest goodâ⬠. In the definition of what democracy is, the philosopher, In Gorgias, through Socrates, Plato, thinks that ââ¬Å" a criminal who does wrong without receiving any punishment is the most wretched person of allâ⬠(Plato, 115) Through Socrates, Plato makes attempts that are repeated in a way in order to give good reason for the fact that justice is a tool meant to design all the needs of the people in the society who are powerful and rich. Consequently, Plato was able to prove that the justice had a liaison in the inherent meaning though acting in line with democracy. In that context Plato does claim that there is democracy in Athens which most people in their argument do attest to. He argues through Socrates, that in a society or country, or city that has democracy, it is not easy for an individual to get his or her justice. He defined justice as a virtue that is helpful in the development of an order basis with proper integration of the societal role and does not make interference with any other societal part. The meaning as depicted sounds a bit controversial given the fact that it does relate to the meaning of justice in the traditional realm and the rationale developed basing on fair play. Plato thinks that political justice is ââ¬Å"harmony in a structured political bodyâ⬠Justice is when three parts of the soul (spirited appetitive, and reasoning) work

Choose one for me Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Choose one for me - Essay Example Regarding my background, I am the youngest child in our family. Since my father died, my eldest brother has made most of the important decisions. At a young age, he had been in charge with a number of responsibilities. Since childhood, I have learned to show respect to my elders. My mother and older siblings have always emphasized the value of politeness. It is always nice to show gratitude to oneââ¬â¢s parents and other relatives. I have been taught that being thankful is a way of showing good conduct. In relation to political behaviour, I have realized that my family background has influenced me to be docile to authority. I have found it almost impossible, if not totally unthinkable, to go against leaders. I have also noticed that I tend to be quite conscious of the tone of my voice when I talk to older people. Actually, people who do not display proper behaviour when communicating with authority or the elderly often irk me. It has also been natural for me to follow rules. Most of the time, I become tensed and check if I am obeying standards when a symbol of authority is nearby. In connection with my relatives, I am proud to say that my roots are from the ancient Arab tribe. Our ancestors were the first inhabitants of the Arabian Gulf. They have initiated the civilization that we are enjoying today. With this history, I have become honoured of my origin. It is also one of my values to be loyal to fellow Arabians. I can say that I regard my heritages with high esteem. This is reflected in my choice of songs. The genre I enjoy listening to is Arabian music. Moreover, I honestly think that my culture is rich with colourful rituals and customs. In addition, Arabian arts and crafts portray interesting painting, delicious dishes, and graceful calligraphy. It would be ideal for our country to continually develop and retain its high-income economy status. I believe that our leaders can do their best in governing the different
